Post-Operative Instructions

Diet

We recommend a very soft diet for the first 48 hours. Do not chew on the side of your mouth that’s been treated for at least 1 week. Avoid hard, crunchy foods and foods with seeds for at least one week.

Swelling

Ice packs applied to the face intermittently (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) are recommended for the first 2 hours. This will ease discomfort and decrease swelling. A plastic bag filled with ice and wrapped in a towel makes a convenient pack. You may continue to use the ice pack for up to 48 hours, after that moist heat can help to reduce the swelling. Any noticeable swelling may take 5 to 7 days to decrease or resolve.

Medications

Most medications should be taken with food in your stomach and a large glass of water. Some medications prescribed to relieve pain may impair judgment and have a sedative effect. With these medications avoid driving, operating machinery, drinking alcoholic beverages or taking additional sedatives or tranquilizers. Only take the pain medication if needed.

If an antibiotic has been prescribed please take until finished (unless there is a problem). Please call us if you have a problem taking the medication.

If you develop itching, rash or swelling of your skin, STOP taking the medications and call our office.

Bleeding

Mild bleeding is to be expected. If bleeding continues or appears heavy, apply continuous pressure with gauze or a tea bag for 30 minutes. Keeping your head elevated can minimize bleeding. We suggest using 2 pillows to elevate your head when lying down.

Activity

After the surgical procedure, we suggest you go home and relax. Avoid excessive exertion for 2 to 3 days following the procedure (weight lifting, aerobics, heavy house or yard work, etc.).

Dressing

A dressing may cover the treated areas. It is common for either small pieces or the entire dressing to come out after a few days. If you are uncomfortable after the dressing falls out, please call us.

Brushing

Please do not brush the treated areas for at least one week. A mouth rinse will be recommended to keep the areas clean. Start the mouth rinse the day after the procedure and rinse twice a day.

Smoking

Avoid smoking for several hours after surgery. Following surgery, the less you smoke, the better the areas will heal.

Calling the doctors

If an emergency should arise, please call our office. If it is after business hours, you will get the answering machine and be asked to dial “O.” You will be connected to our answering service that will page one of the doctors
