Extractions and Bone Grafting

When a tooth is extracted the bone socket will shrink as it heals. Less bone can lead to cosmetic issues. Additionally, insufficient bone may affect future restorative considerations as dental implants require adequate available bone for proper placement. Bone grafting at the time of extraction is an effective way to minimize the bone loss. Further, careful management of the gum tissue along with bone grafting can allow for a better cosmetic outcome.

Procedure

Immediately after the tooth is extracted, the socket is filled with a bone material. There are a variety of bone grafting particulates available to enhance your body’s ability to heal. This bone is usually held in place with membranes. In the esthetic zone, a gingival graft (small piece of tissue taken from the roof of your mouth) may be placed over the socket. The graft is used to thicken the gum tissue and to minimize any gingival collapse.

Most patients report no difference in the healing experience when compared to an extraction without bone grafting.
