Non-Surgical Treatment of Periodontal Disease

The initial step in treating periodontal disease is to obtain a diagnosis. This involves a comprehensive examination and evaluation of current X-rays. We can take X-rays at our office or, if they are available, we can use a set of X-rays from your dentist. After the diagnosis and a discussion of your concerns, we will develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for you. We will communicate and coordinate with your dentist during all phases of your treatment.

Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

This process involves a deep cleaning under the gum tissue in order to remove the causative agents, plaque and tartar, from the roots.

For those that have earlier forms of periodontal disease, this may restore oral health. For individuals with more advanced forms of the disease, periodontal scaling and root planing can bring the infection under control and start the healing process, although surgical intervention may still be recommended.

Antibiotics

In some cases, antibiotics are prescribed in conjunction with treatment to help reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth.

Products containing antibiotics are also available for local delivery. These can be placed directly into the gum pocket and can be helpful in improving localized areas of disease.

Home care

Your personal home care plays an essential role in achieving oral health. We recommend a healthy diet that supplies balanced nutrients and does not promote excessive plaque build-up.

Proper oral hygiene methods are imperative in keeping your teeth healthy and clean for years to come. Additionally, dental aids can help control the plaque and bacteria that cause gum disease. We will provide you with comprehensive oral hygiene instructions that include recommendation of appropriate dental aids.
